Death Knight is the name of two distinct orders of powerful necromancers. These orders share a few things in common, including riding horses with horned skulls for heads and some similar abilities.
The death knights of the Second War were powerful undead necromancers created by Gul'dan to replace the warlocks slaughtered by Orgrim Doomhammer. The first and most prominent of the death knights was Teron Gorefiend.
A new order of death knights emerged during the Third War, in service to The Lich King. They were created from living and undead humans (and occasionally other races) who had been granted unholy runeblades, and most were former paladins who had forsaken the Holy Light. The most famous of examples and the main revolution of The Lich King is Arthas.
Talent Trees: Blood (weapons, armor, and strikes), Frost (control, counters, and combos) and Unholy (spells, summons, and diseases).

The Rune System
Death Knights will use a rune system instead of rage/mana/energy. This system seems to be a slightly more robust form of energy. Death knights have access to 3 types of runes: unholy, blood, and frost. The death knight has access to two of each rune. These runes are drained when the DK uses abilities and spells. The runes then regenerate over time.
The resource mechanics for Death Knights are runes and runic power. A skilled death knight makes efficient, timely use of runes and runic power to maximize his or her damage-dealing or tanking abilities.
- Runes: Every death knight ability requires runes, which come in three varieties: blood, frost, and unholy. Depending on the ability, it may require runes of a single type or a combination of types. When a rune is used, it has a cooldown period before it can be used again. Death knights can customize which array of six runes to have available at a given time, which can aid their ability to perform certain roles. For example, a tanking death knight may wish to load his or her rune array with more Frost runes.
- Runic Power: As rune abilities are used, the death knight also generates another resource called runic power. The death knight will have certain abilities that consume all available runic power, with varying levels of effectiveness based on total runic power spent. Similar to a warrior¡¯s rage, runic power decays over time if not spent.
Rune Forging
This Death Knight profession allows them to augment their rune blade with various runes that provide bonus effects. Modifying a rune weapon requires the Rune Forge in Ebon Hold. Rune forging take the place of weapon enchants.
- Rune of Cinderglacier - Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to increase your Frost and Shadow spell damage by 10% for 15 sec.
- Rune of Frostfever - Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to inflict a disease that causes Frost damage and lowers attack power by 10% for 20 sec.
- Rune of Lichbane - Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to strike undead for extra Fire damage and stun them for 5 sec.
- Rune of Spellbreaking - Affixes your two-handed rune weapon with a rune that deflects 5% of all spell damage.
- Rune of Swordbreaking - Affixes your two-handed rune weapon with a rune that increases Parry chance by 3%.
- Rune of the Fallen Crusader - Affixes your rune weapon with a rune that has a chance to heal you for 3% and increase total Strength by 30% for 15 sec.
The fearsome death knight, World of Warcraft's first Hero class, is not your average adventurer seeking to prove his or her worth on Azeroth's fields of battle. No longer servants of the Lich King, they begin their new calling as experienced, formidable adversaries, heavily armed and armored and possessing an arsenal of deadly and forbidden magic learned in the Lich King's thrall.
To create a Death Knight you must have one character on your account that is level 55 or above.
The expansion Wrath of the Lich King(WotLK player abbreviation)(wrath bliz abbreviation) Will introduce the first of many hero classes, the Deathknight. The Deathknight will be a plate wearing class that can use 2h blades(swords and axes) or duel weild(that is right no shields). They will be a tank/dps class.
Unlocking the deathknight will be possible for both casual and hardcore through a level 80 chain quest(difficulty around that of warlock 60 mount quest) Once this quest is completed you will be able to create a new character with the class deathknight starting at level 60.
The deathknight is an endgame class so blizzard has decided instead of forcing you to start at level 1 you will start at 60 with greens and epic mount.
ANY race can become deathknights(gnome deathknights ftw) While blizzards choice defies some lore(draenei, gnome, ect) Blizzard replied with "it would not be fair to limit it to specific races". How they plan to fit this in with lore is unknown at the time.
The deathknights play style will be unlike any other class currently with a new "rune system" instead of mana, energy, or rage. The rune types are Frost, Blood, and Death. Your spells will require specific runes. You acquire these runes by simply etching them into you "sword"(this dose not mean you can have an axe, this is just what its called" You may have up to 6 runes and each spell uses these runes. Each rune will have cooldowns limiting how much you can spam spells.
The deathknight is not a "pet focused class" but dose have some pet spells such as "summon undead army" Which can be seen in the official trailer. This class will focus in melee/casting dps, while also being a viable tank(without shields it will be interesting how bliz pulls this off)
