Diablo 4 Trading Auction House

The game will not have an auction house.

Will loot drops or trading be the best source of items?

Blizzard wants to encourage trading in Diablo 4, especially given the open, shared world; however, it wants most of a character’s best items to come from monster drops.

People are asking if is there trading in Diablo 4. So, yeah.

It's people are curious to know how that works in Diablo 4. We get this question a lot and we're continuing to. You know, trading in D4 is less restrictive than it is in D3. But it's by no means wide-open trading. And we know that there are lots of players who enjoy trading. Like, enjoy the game for the trading experience. Those players would like to have.

You know, as few restrictions on trading as possible. So we want to support that to the extent that we can. But we also want to protect the core game Loop of killing monsters to get loot. So there are some restrictions on trading to incur to further encourage the situation where the best way to get the most powerful loot is to kill monsters. That's sort of our overriding directive there.

But you know, when you think about all the stuff that we're doing with that, we plan to do with seasons and the gaming live service. We could certainly see opportunities for different trading rule sets in the future.

Can Legendary and Unique items be traded?

No. In a December 2022 interview with Diablo 4’s developers , well-known Diablo YouTuber, Rhykker, confirmed that the following list of items cannot be traded:

  • Legendary items
  • Unique items
  • Legendary Aspects
  • Items enchanted by the Occultist

Other types of items

Despite these restrictions on the highest tiers of items, Rhykker went on to say that most other items are eligible for trade:

“Pretty much everything else can be traded.”

What are the most valuable items to trade?

Blizzard predicts that the top end-game items for trade will be Rares with good rolls that can be upgraded into Legendaries using Legendary Aspects. Again, you can trade Rares, but you can’t trade Legendaries.

“The developers think the best in-game base items will be Rares that you turn into Legendaries rather than straight Legendaries themselves. That’s good for trade. The devs see a trade scene that revolves around trading these really high-end Rares to turn into Legendaries.”

Can you trade cosmetic items?

No. Items purchased with Premium Currency (i.e., real money) on Diablo 4’s cosmetic items shop cannot be traded to other players . These items, which only alter a character’s appearance, not power, are account bound.

“You can not sell or trade anything that comes from the shop in Diablo 4.”

Is there an Auction House feature for trading?

No. Realizing from past experience that an Auction House doesn’t mesh well with the Diablo series’ gameplay, Blizzard won’t be including the feature in Diablo 4.

What are the types of tradable items?

[Note: The trading system detailed below comes from a 2019 interview and may be outdated]

Items will fall into one of three trading restriction categories:

  • No restrictions: common items that can be traded multiple times
  • Bind-on-trade: mid-tier items that can be traded once
  • Bind-on-pickup: powerful items that can’t be traded

Here’s Blizzard describing the current Diablo 4 trade system :

“We want to integrate trading more closely in Diablo IV, so we’re exploring several systems to do that. The one we’re currently leaning toward is one where there’d be three types of items. A type of item that’s tradable all the time with no restrictions, like consumables, crafting mats, and certain armor. There’d also be items that could be traded once and then bound. And then some set of items that can never be traded — bind on pick-up. Likely the most powerful items would be bind on pick-up.”

Trading with clanmates

There’s hints that the clan bank feature, first thought to only be for clanmates to pool gold, may have special trading features built into it . One could imagine posting one’s hand-me-down gear for lower level clanmates to benefit from.

“We want Diablo 4 to be social, and the shared world is something we’re leaning on. We do want that opportunity for players to say: “I can’t believe you have that item. Let me barter with you.” We’re still figuring out the limitations on trading. We’ll have player-to-player and with your clan via the clan bank.”

Q: Will there be trading?
A: Yes. While we’re still working on the details, we know this is a huge community request and we want to reintroduce some level of trading while still preserving the loot-finding experience.
