Diablo 4 World Map: Explore Sanctuary

Diablo IV World Map

The world in which the Diablo is set is called Sanctuary, it’s the physical realm of the Diablo universe. Below you will find the Diablo world map with key locations relevant to the lore.

Diablo IV promises to be a larger game world that will include more zones interlinked. The major zones announced to date include the following:

These five zones were revealed at BlizzCon 2019 when Diablo IV was announced.

World Explore Sanctuary

Explore Sanctuary – Discover the world of Sanctuary as you battle through its expansive lands. Join fellow adventurers, retake besieged towns, delve into corrupted dungeons, and uncover lost secrets as you fight for the fate of the world.

Strongholds PVP
Heroic adventurers can clear out Strongholds such as this one, claiming them once again for the citizens of Sanctuary. The town will never be the same, but victory here can leave a lasting mark and transform this hostile region into a safe haven. Battles take a turn when you enter PvP zones. Mark yourself as “hostile” and these high-risk, high-reward areas of Sanctuary allow you to take a swing at other players for their valuable loot. But be warned. This also opens you up to being swung at.

Traversing the World

When playing the previous games it’s not quite clear-cut where you are in the world but that will change in Diablo IV when moving between different zones will be seamless. This will bring changes to landscape weather and cultures. Blizzard is also adding mounts to the game to make traveling around the game world faster.

The map below shows the playable areas of Diablo 4. The map above details what’s included in the initial release of Diablo IV and expansions may expand the playable area further.

Open World & Multiplayer Gameplay

Unlike previous Diablo games, Diablo IV is fully open world. This means you can explore any of the five distinct regions in any order, at any time, and travel seamlessly between them. Sanctuary will become a living, breathing place to explore and plunder. With introductions like monster ecologies tied to regions, a shared player world with public events, and town points of interest that act as social hubs, Diablo IV will feel a little less lonely (though no less bleak).

The distinctive regions we’re introducing are connected contiguously, for streamlined adventuring from area to area with no loading interruptions.

Scosglen

Home to the Druids, this verdant and rainy land is heavily forested and borders the coast. Werewolves lurk in the thick foliage and the new monster family, the Drowned, crowd the haunted coastlines, waiting to drag unsuspecting victims to a watery doom.

Fractured Peaks

Snowy and secluded, a sect of devout priests find refuge in the isolation of this high mountain range. They seek enlightenment while remaining unaware of the horrors that dwell in the dark cave complexes below.

Dry Steppes

The unforgiving, harsh environment of the Dry Steppes is home only to the hardiest—or desperate—souls. Be warned; the denizens of this land will do anything to survive, resorting to anything from petty banditry to savage cannibalism.

Hawezar

Witches and zealots call this snake-infested swampland home, scouring the murky depths for ancient artifacts. The unaware will quickly find themselves in dire straits.

Kejhistan

As we’ve seen from previous visits to Alcarnus and Caldeum, the desert shadows of Kejhistan make excellent cover for a group of rising cultists. They quietly plumb abandoned ruins, seeking power to aid the return of the ancient Prime Evils.

History of Sanctuary

Created by the powerful race birthed from angels and demons, the Nephalem, it became their plane of existence. Sanctuary and the Nephalem spawned from the offspring of the demoness Lilith (see Diablo IV cinematic trailer) and the archangel Inarius.

Sanctuary was under threat from the High Heavens and the Angiris Council who felt it was an abomination. Tyrael was to take the great armies of the High Heavens (also called the Heavenly Host) and destroy Sanctuary.

Uldyssian,  once a simple farmer who discovered he had Nepahlim ancestry and set out to stop angels and demons from taking over Sanctuary, persuaded Tyrael that it should remain unharmed. As Tyrael had the deciding vote within the  Angiris Council, the world of Sanctuary was allowed to survive.

After the existence of Sanctuary was secured, Tyrael was ordered by his fellow angels on many occasions not to interfere with the mortal world. He has often disobeyed, fearing that Sanctuary would otherwise fall into the hands of the Burning Hells (the home of all demons).
