Born in Mississippi, the teenaged Rogue grew up and ran away from home. She was taken in by the blue-skinned shapeshifter Mystique. Unable to cope with her newly formed life-force stealing powers after putting her first boyfriend in a coma with just a kiss, the impressionable young Rogue followed in her adopted mother Mystique's criminal footsteps.

Rogue and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

Rogue joined Mystique on jaded mutant Magneto¡¯s rough team of bad guys known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Due to a lack of control over her new powers, Rogue killed a superhero, Ms. Marvel, on her first mission with the Brotherhood. This was X-Men readers¡¯ introduction to the troubled and confused young mutant. Rogue made her first appearance in Uncanny X-Men #158 and it wasn¡¯t long before the guilt-ridden teen was recruited by Professor X. The power-absorbing mutant has always displayed her signature white-streak through her dark brown hair in her entire Marvel comics run.

Rogue Joins the X-Men, Develops Powers, Skills

By Uncanny X-Men #171, Professor Charles Xavier had Rogue fighting for the good guys. Rogue¡¯s mutant abilities include being able to temporarily absorb other mutants¡¯ powers, memories and emotions simply by touching their skin. For a period of time after direct skin contact, Rogue manifests these things until they eventually wear off. Prolonged contact can lead to paralysis, coma, and even death. Because Rogue is afraid of accidentally causing harm to someone, she often wears long-sleeved gloves and cloaks to prevent skin contact.

Rogue Kills Ms Marvel and Sunfire

Rogue killed superhero Ms Marvel when she was on the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. She then discovered that when she kills a person or mutant with her touch, her new abilities never wear off. From Ms Marvel, Rogue permanently gained Ms Marvel¡¯s powers of flight and super strength. Rogue is able to control these abilities, but she has yet to be able to control her abilities enough to stall her absorbing powers while touching another mutant's skin.

In her 2004 mini-series, Rogue also killed the mutant Sunfire, permanently retaining his fire-related powers.

Rogue and Gambit

Rogue has explained that even a touch leaves a permanent echo of the person¡¯s memories and consciousness in her mind even though the powers she gains from them fade away. She retains extraordinary empathy and insight to everyone who is exposed to her skin, and consequently Rogue often feels unstable and isolated.

Though finding love for one such as Rogue would prove difficult, the sweet ¡®n¡¯ sassy mutant found a great companion with fellow X-Men and New Orleans charmer Gambit. Gambit, who has the ability to kinetically charge inanimate objects, and Rogue have one of the longest enduring relationship in the Marvel Universe.
