For World of Warcraft players, trade skills can be a fun way to add flavor to the character and make money. With the exception of engineering, almost any trade skill you will pick up in World of Warcraft can be profitable, however one of the most profitable, short of mining is the combination of skinning and leather working.

Starting out in Leatherworking

Players do not have to pick up skinning and leather working together, but it makes sense to do so. Skinning trainers can be found right next to the leather working trainer when you first pick up either of the trade skills.. Not only is this convenient for the player who chooses both, but the leatherworking who pick ups skinning will be able to supply himself with much of the material he needs to raise the leatherworking skill.

Once the player who decides to pick up leather working and skinning purchases training, the player's next purchase for his character in the game should be that of a skinning knife. Much of the material the World of Warcraft leatherworker needs will be ¡°skinned¡± off of the beast or critter type mobs in the game which produce different types of hides ranging from ruined leather to rugged leather.

Improving in WoW Leatherworking

The next step of the leatherworking character will be to skin beasts and critters to get ruined scraps of leather or light leather. Light leather is used in most of the early Leather working recipes and players can increase their skill at the lowest levels of the leatherworking profession by making it. One of the early and most useful recipes besides the bits of armor for leather wearing classes such as rogues, druids, and in the early levels shamans and hunters will be the light armor kits.

Not only can the light armor kits be added to the armor of the leatherworker, but armkits can be added to all types of armor in the game from cloth to plate. (Plate wearers will more than likely want the heavier kits that can be made at higher leatherworking skill levels..) The armor kits sell well at the auction house, but if the World of Warcraft leatherworker wishes to sell the armor kits to vendors to vendors only, he should instead save the stacks of leather gained from skinning and sell those to a merchant.. Gathering pieces of leather from killed monsters is easily and has no expense associated with it.

Once light leather patterns become gray to the leatherworking player, the player will then move on to medium leather pattenrs. It is possible to make the higher level leather types from the leather types lower on the scale. Three ruined scraps make one light leather. Four light leathers make up one medium leather, five medium leathers make up one heavy leather, and six heavy leathers make up one thick leather.

Tribal, Elemental, or Dragonscale: Your Choice

After reaching a leatherworking skill of 225, players should decide between tribal, elemental, and dragon scale. A patch to the game that occurred slightly before the Burning Crusade removed the need for players to specialize. Any player can learn patterns from all three leather working patterns, although to gain training from the specialization trainers a leather worker still must do the quests to unlock each type.
