Quest Guide

Eridana-ZJ's Guide to getting N'lyeth, Sliver of N'zoth

A couple of things I’ve noticed and how I got this achievement done:

Shortly after you kill one or two of your own faction, there is a high probability that you will become bounty hunted. This makes killing people of your own faction difficult since you can’t fly and the opposite faction is chasing you down.

I was bouncing around Nazjatar trying to get it done, but would get overrun when the bounty on me happened.
I tried logging out for a bit to see if bounty would drop, it dropped the bounty, kept assassin, and dropped my quest.
Hearthing or teleporting to other BFA zones seems to also drop the quest.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could kill some of your faction and hide from the prying eyes of bounty hunters? You can!
But I recommend gathering some sacrifices, I mean a few friends, to help.
If you get 4 sacri-, er, friends, you can be done in 21 minutes after accepting your tentacles from N'Zoth.

This is a great week to get the toy because of Call to Arms: Nazjatar.
Why?
Mardivh’s Lab is why. :-D

This place has been a favorite spot to hide while trolling. It’s also a perfect spot to hang out and bathe in your tentacly glory while you’re a bounty.

So. While you’re waiting here, invite 4 friends over to the mouth of the cave. I was able to invite them to group to make sure they were in the same shard as of today. Once they are there, have them take off all their gear, pop out of the cave for a few seconds, mow them all down with focusing iris, and make your way back to the safety of Mardivh’s lab.

Your buddies will have a 10 minute debuff not allowing their deaths to count towards your progress. They can put their gear back on and fly off to do other stuff and come back in 10 minutes for more laser to the face. Some will try to find you in the cave, but it’s been my experience that people chasing your bounty will just fly away, because they realize you’re trolling them in the cave. When your buddies come back, have them tell you when the coast is clear and mow them down again.

Repeat the process three times and you're done. This should take a little over 20 minutes after you use the sliver. Make sure you're at 100% HP before using it!
Join me and fight for N’Zoth! <3

UPDATE: I've been reading other comments that say their quest item kills them. This leads me to believe that the Sliver of N'Zoth's damage effect can CRIT!
I noticed it hurting more than it should while trying to do the quest and didn't really put much thought into it. Sometimes it would chunk me down to about 15-20% health, but would never kill me. Even now that I have the toy it will chunk me every once in a while.

The only reason I think I have been surviving every time it crits is because my WPVP set has ~12% versatility. I highly suggest using a defensive or having a decent amount of versatility when you use the quest item/toy. Keep in mind that it is shadow damage.
To unlock the toy N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth, you will first need to turn War Mode on and become an Alliance Assassin or Horde Assassin by killing 10 players of the opposite faction without dying in Kul Tiras or Zandalar. The moment you reach Assassin, you will be offered a new quest from an unseen presence (presumably N'Zoth himself), requesting you to prove your worth to him by slaying members of your own faction.

There are two versions of this quest: Servant of N'Zoth for Alliance players, and Servant of N'Zoth for Horde players.

By accepting the quest, you will receive N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth, which can be used to transform your character into a Servant of N'Zoth, but be careful - Using the item will damage you by 60% of your maximum health, so make sure you're fully healed before using it! The effect is quite cool, covering your character in tentacles and a void aura. The effect lasts for 1 hour.

The quest requires you to kill 10 of your own faction's members without dying. Dying at any point will automatically fail the quest, and you will need to reach Assassin again to start the quest over.

Completing the quest awards you a toy version of N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth that allows you to become a Shath'yar without requiring reaching Assassin, as well as the Feat of Strength Servant of N'Zoth, which awards the title %s, Servant of N'Zoth. According to N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth description, you are able to become a Servant of N'Zoth in Kul Tiras, Zandalar, Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms.

Has a chance to instantly kill you. It says it deals 60% of your hp but sometimes it instantly kills you, making you fail the quest and requiring you to get assassin again to get it. (and waiting for the 1hr cooldown to go away)
Got the quest, used the item, my character instantly died. Failed the quest
PSA: If you're working on the quest and dailies reset, you lose the quest. You retain the buff, but killing someone doesn't do anything. Just learned this the hard way and I was 7/10
DON'T hearth or take any portal, you will lose the quest but it won't tell you, i wouldn't even change zone. i got the quest in vale, then hearth to tiragarde and went to nazjatar, i still had buff on me but I noticed it wasn't counting kills, I killed 10 of my faction but then it gave me the quest again and I was at 0/10. not a good quest design, I had not left any BFA or assault zone so I should not have lost the quest.
Can't kill the same person over and over, it gives a 10 minute debuff on the other.
Just did this today, both this quest and The Alliance Slayer, by killing different trial classes (110 level). Please note the following:
  • I had another account where I could create up to 4 trial classes in 1h (seems that you are limited to 4 trial/hour). I had another 2 caracters already created on that account. I didn't know if the quest works with trial account, so I activated the dagger and kill the trial class. It counted for the quest progression. So I started login/logout on each character, fly up to my main and kill them. For the rest, I had help from a friend who did trial classes too.
  • I recommend having all the other characters already parked in the area where you want to stay and do the killing (probably it's better to have all 10 of them already created). It's a lot faster to login (without any addons), get killed, logout (20s), total of 1 min max/kill
  • I didn't know that killing a horde player for this quest counts to The Alliance Slayer one, so it was a bonus. It was a little difficult to find a safe spot since I had a bounty on my head, but it was ok.
  • I know that this way isn't the right and honorable way to do this achievement, but I've spammed for 30 min on General chat, looking for help and giving gold in return, but nobody was interested.
Hope this helps someone, since at least I didn't find anything clear related to trial clases or 110/120 level. Good luck!
What I learned from being an assassin five times, picking up the quest Servant of N'Zoth five times and failing four times
Basics
  • You must become an assassin before N'Zoth will offer you the quest Servant of N'Zoth. Accept immediately. You have at least 10 minutes to click on the dagger icon N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth. This casts the spell Servant of N'Zoth, transforming you into a void wrath with the ability to kill members of your faction. Like the tool tip says, you become Shath'Yar, breaking allegiance to your faction and serving only N'Zoth. Use the 10+ minutes to join or start a group and line up willing sacrifices.
  • Once you click on N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth, you have 60 minutes to kill 10 members of your faction and not die yourself. See the large yellow eyeball timer at the top of the screen.
  • You can't use flight points, portals or hearthstones or log out.
  • Edit: You can fly between BFA zones, but consider before travelling to/from Mechagon. See comments for/against in the section called "Other".

Hard to tell my targets from the opposite faction
  • Once you become a void wraith, your faction's nameplates change to enemy colors (red at a distance, class colors up close). They are your targets.
  • Check the race on a nameplate if it isn't obvious whether a player is your target or the opposite faction. Some races, like Pandarans, could be either faction and aren't worth the risk to attack.

Willing sacrifices
  • Ask in local chat if anyone is willing to be a sacrifice. Two random people agreed!
  • Ask a friend or guildie to be a sacrifice. They can sacrifice themselves once every 10 minutes, but must stay online for the timer to count down.
  • Be sure a friend acting as a sacrifice is on your shard. To do that, start a group and invite your sacrifice. If your sacrifice is in the same zone, but not part of your group and you can't see them, ask them to say something in Chat -- so the group leader can click on their name and Invite.
  • If you die, you fail the quest. Become a sacrifice. Abandon the quest immediately, because you can't pick up the Servant of N'Zoth quest for another 60 minutes.
  • Sacrifices should put their weapons and maybe some gear in their bag. Their gear won't be damaged if they don't, but it's easier to dispatch a tank if auto attack isn't on.

Doing the quest in a group
  • This is the best approach.
  • Find out if other members of your group have clicked on the icon of N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth yet. If some members of the group haven't, they'll have enemy nameplate colors, so try not to kill them.
  • Use markers to track group members.
  • Find out how many kills each one needs.
  • If someone in your group becomes a marked Assassin and can't fly, keep them in your sights.

Other
  • Although you are now an enemy to your faction, you keep the language and can use chat.
  • Stay out of your base. Pick off stragglers. Avoid the other faction.
  • Be cautious.
  • sbenson says above to use gear or buffs with Versatility.
  • I was able fly from Drustvar to Mechagon on my own mount without losing the Servant of N'Zoth quest (as did other members of my group). But wolffive0 said he lost the quest flying from Mechagon to Drustvar. You cannot fly from Stormsong Valley to Nazjatar, you will be thrown back to Stormsong Valley (alive). You can fly from Nazmir to where Nazjatar should be, but there is nothing there under water or above water. You will die of fatigue and even worse, your corpse will die when you return to pick up your body.

The Toy N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth
  • Once you successfully complete the quest you get the achievement Servant of N'Zoth, the title Servant of N'Zoth and the toy N'lyeth, Sliver of N'Zoth goes into your inventory.
  • The toy turns you into a void wrath for 60 minutes. Like in the quest, you become Shath'Yar with the ability to kill your own faction when War Mode is on in Kul Tiras, Zandalar, Uldum and Vale of Eternal Blossoms. Not an exploit! 60 minutes between uses.

Make sure you have space in your inventory and questlog, else the quest will directly fail because the game wasn't able to put the item into your inventory or accept the quest.

Also make sure to not leave the zone at any point, else you will have to start from scratch.
Does NOT count when you kill players from your faction when they are below level 120.
Not sure if intended, but Vulpera Make Camp allows you to turn off WM to finish the quest with WM off. Perhaps you could just go to Newhome to turn WM off and do the same. Really useful because you will eventually get bounty.
Guide for achievement/title/toy/quest without premades

1. Join a Call to Arms group in LFG.
2. Farm 10 kills without dying to receive this quest.
3. Go somewhere where you are safe while not leaving the zone you got the quest in.
4. Type
/who z-"[your zone]" 120 [any class]
5. Right click the first guy in the list to whisper him and copy paste him a question like
Can I please quickly kill you for N'Zoth in [your zone], if you have war mode enabled?
6. Repeat this for everyone in the list ONCE. After messaging everyone use another class. If you used all classes multibox a level 1 character on a starter account on a big server and do /who there. Then message the people in that list on your main character by typing
/w [name-server] [question]
7. Instantly invite the people who replied to you with yes in your group and meet up. Don't go to hot spots where you might be killed by someone else.
8. List your group in LFG with a title like
Servant of Nz plz let me kill u
and put
Nzoth, N'Zoth
in the description like a tag. Somebody might join to help. Relist your group routinely to be at the top of LFG.
9. Use the sliver right before killing the first alliance buddy. You now have 1 hour for the remaining 9. Don't die, don't leave the zone and don't log out.

Works best during peak hours. I would do this before Shadowlands, once people leave the BfA zones it will be a lot harder.
If you use the Dagger on yourself, then die but manage to reacquire the quest - your dagger will be on cooldown for 1 hour. You cannot leave the zone with the quest in your inventory OR log out as that will abandon the quest. So you must hang out in the zone for 1 hour for your cooldown to reset.
when you get the buff, your faction will change as well as the language you talk. in your new language, if you say "retard" it will be shown as N'zoth to other players. seems N'zoth is not respected by the shath'yari people after all.
You can party up with another player with the buff and the kills will give credit to both of you. Numbers make ganking easier. You can join a pvp group from the finder to get your assassin buff and just ask if anyone wants to do the quest together afterwards.
Still nothing as of today. Seems still bugged or removed totally.
Just a few points to add to all this (I was doing this on an ally rogue). For reference (about halfway through patch 8.3) I was moderately geared (around 460 ilevel and around 430k hp). I've noticed that a lot of more geared players have over 500k hp and around 475 ilevel. That is a problem in itself as you have to be able to kill them and it's a lot harder if they're more geared than you.
  • I tried to do it the "right" way first, without asking anyone for help. But every time I got double teamed or more and whether ppl are jerks and just want to screw you over or they just have no idea what's going on (most likely) who knows.
  • I asked some ppl for help and luckily one guy helped me who had multiple alts and a friend with alts. He had to group with me so he would go to the right shard. One problem I found when doing it this way is that the timer on the debuff that doesn't let you kill them for 10 mins doesn't seem to count down unless you are on the toon.
  • One weird thing that happened this last time was that I never got a bounty. The other times, I always got a bounty, usually very quick. I also helped another guy do this the same day and he didn't get a bounty either. So whether something has changed or we just got lucky who knows?
  • One thing I wanted to mention that I was curious about is that the guards don't attack you when you're a Servant of N'zoth (something I don't see anyone mention). If they attack you if you attack someone in the base I don't know, but it'd be interesting to try
  • I think others have mentioned this but I'll say it anyway. If you get the quest and die the CD on the knife starts (1 hour) and you can get the quest again but not be able to do it due to the CD. So no use trying until the hour has passed.
I'd just like to thank the people who helped me (won't list their toons names here)! You forget sometimes that a lot of nice ppl play this game!
Quest will fail if you take a portal, hearth, etc.
If you form two five-man groups in the same phase who all use the Sliver at once, are they friendly to each other?
I got the quest in Uldum after today's CTA. I activated it and I went to Zidormi to check whether I keep the quest or it clears if I go back to the cata-version.

As expected the quest got cleared from my quest log.
This quest seems to be either bugged, or removed.

I tested in Zuldazar today with a level 55 Paladin as the killer on Horde side, and a level 50 Priest victim on Alliance side.

I received Horde Assassin debuff fine, and earned The Alliance Slayer fine.

This quest was never offered to me throughout. So, until we get word from Blizz, I would consider this quest and achievement to be unavailable.
Figured I'd give this a shot alone today. Managed to get it. Find a realm where there's a big ongoing fight and just do hit and run tactics. I'd send a purification blast into the middle of the fray and retreat back. This way you can do it alone. Bring goblin gliders and whatever else you need to escape.
Today something wierd happened. I was in Vale doing CTA and got the quest. Finished my CTA and knowing that I wont do it I hsed (using the shadowlands toy). Didnt fail the quest and I went in Dazaralor and did it ez with friends:P
Can't confirm if it will work everytime, but it did for me
This is such a screwy quest. I thought I'd get bounty, kill myself and then get this quest hoping I'd be unable to get a bounty for awhile. Instead, I heard the speech from N'zoth when you get the quest, but I didn't get the quest.
Heads up for anyone trying to get it done by cycling a single friend's alts:

So each character you kill for the quest gives the killed character the Sacrificed to N'Zoth debuff. It lasts 10 minutes and only counts down when logged on the debuffed character. Keep in mind that the Servant of N'Zoth buff your own character has for the quest only lasts 1 hour, so you can't afford to sit around waiting 10 minutes for every debuffed character a 2nd time. You're better off asking several friends instead of just one, if your friend doesn't have 10 alts.
You can be offered this quest while in a group, so joining 25 kill groups in a zone is a quick way to be offered this quest.

Note that changing continents will forcibly drop the quest, so you cannot, say, get offered this quest in Uldum and then do it in Tiragarde Sound. Not sure if changing zones on the same continent will drop the quest.
Some useful data that I got with my rogue. You can attack people with low level 110-120. If after you got the quest you can change the zone (I did between the kultira zones) to get you out of the assassin's debuff of the alliance or horde and if you kill only your faction then you don't get the bounty. And finally if you are alone and you cant find help you can try to be rogue and wait for a fight between the factions and when they are distracted you throw a dagger and you disappear before they attack you and give you the credit when the one you attacked dies
I tried to do this 3 times and didn't make it with group or solo. I'm just unlucky and since no one will do this anymore when shadowlands comes but it's okay achievement challenge.
If your 60 minute n'zoth faction buff wears off, you will no longer have the sliver and will have to abandon the quest and start over.
Quest just disappeared at 08:00 of the morning server time, at the daily quest reset timer (and before using the knife).
Slightly niche way of getting this done - requires you to have a horde dk to do the killing and some willing sacrifices, but it does give you protection from the alliance pursuing you.

You are going to do this in Vol'dun, specifically in the temple of Akunda. Your 'killer' should do the quests until they are able to go pass the blue barrier protecting the temple. This means they have a safe haven. After that you can set up the killin'. The first part, killing 10 alliance, can be done anywhere in the zone. I killed a toon on my second account so I did up on top of mountain near the graveyard, but you can do it anywhere if you have victims.

Once you have the quest, you should head on into the temple and position yourself inside, out of sight of the doorway (because it is possible to target you through the barrier, even if alliance can't physically come inside). Then you bring your friendly horde victims - even if they haven't done the quests, its fine - this is why you should use a dk as you can grip them into the temple to kill them.

Occasionally a horde guard might run in but don't panic. Just move to the back of the room and they will despawn before they attack you.

You could also do this with a ranged character by shooting out of the door, but it means you will be vulnerable to alliance whilst doing that part. If you use a dk to grip them inside, neither you nor your victims can be easily attacked.

Hope that helps someone!
Got the quest popping up today in Ardenweald after killing a multiboxer two times (so 10 hordekills). Didn't attempt it, but it seems it is still there.
Make sure your bags have some empty space before attempting... don't be like me and go in there with full bags :/
EDIT: Do NOT try this anymore. Several people have reported that it no longer works and you automatically fail if you die at any point.

You can avoid getting bounty hunted by killing yourself after you get the quest (but before you actually use the Sliver).

By killing yourself, you reset your Assassin status and avoid getting bounty hunted. And since you die before actually using the Sliver, it does not affect the quest. If you then kill 10 members of your own faction (without killing the opposite faction), there is zero chance of getting bounty hunted.

Not being bounty hunted makes this quest much easier, as you can just fly around and gank isolated low-geared players of your faction without much risk of dying.
Very important info:

You cannot just swap through a set of toons, because you get a 10 min debuff that does not go down if you are logged out. :(
YOU DO NOT GET CREDIT FOR NZOTH KILLS IF YOU ARE IN RAID WITH YOUR VICTIMS.
As for patch 9.0 any Shadowlands PvP quest which gives you the buff "Free For All" will do.
I've got the quest during one of this quests and even without using the item the quest gives you I still got credit for the quest while killing players of my faction. After 10 kills I've got the achievement, the title and the toy.
I have been unable to get the Horde Assassin buff in Mechagon on release week. I have tried several times, getting at least 10-20 kills each time.
I get offered the quest and when I click accept, nothing happens... no quest or item in my bag. My bags have space

Edit: I think my quest logs may have been full, but not sure as it never said my log was full.
