WoW Evoker Abilities – Dragonflight

Evoker Class Abilities

Evokers have the ability to wield the magic of all five Dragonflights, in a prismatic effect that the developers call a “coalescence” of all the Dragonflights. An example of each type follows:

  • Pyre: (Devastation Talent) Red – Lob a ball of flame, dealing (81% of Spell power) Fire damage to the target and nearby enemies.
  • Disintegrate: Blue – Tear into an enemy with a blast of blue magic, inflicting (228% of Spell power) Spellfrost damage over 3 sec, and slowing their movement speed by 30% for 3 sec.
  • Emerald Blossom: Green – Grow a bulb from the Emerald Dream at an ally’s location. After 2 sec, heal up to 3 injured allies within 10 yds for (150% of Spell power).
  • Deep Breath: Black – Take in a deep breath and fly to the targeted location, spewing molten cinders dealing (230% of Spell power) Volcanic damage to enemies in your path. You are immune to movement impairing and loss of control effects while flying.
  • Blessing of the Bronze: Bronze – Weave the threads of time, reducing the cooldown of a major movement ability for all party and raid members by 15% for 1 hour.

These color designations aren’t just “color” for the sake of it. You get talents and other abilities that will affect an entire color class of spells and may affect other spells or color classes as well. For example, the Devastation talent Charged Blast, your Blue damage increases the damage of your next Pyre by 5%, stacking 8 times. Knowing how those work together will go a long way toward improving your effectiveness.

Empowering Abilities

A new mechanic exclusive to Evokers is Empowered Spells. The basic concept is that you first take a deep inhaled breath, and then you let out the breath with your breath attack. The longer you inhale, the more powerful the spell effect will be. You will get your first taste of this during the Evoker starting zone with your first breath attack, Fire Breath.

How you will do this is up to how you set your spell preferences. Under Gameplay-Controls, you have two options under Empowered Spell Input: Hold and Release, or Press and Tap. Hold and Release is default. Play with both to see which you prefer.

With Hold and Release, you hold down the number key corresponding to its place on the spell bar to charge the spell, then release when you want to cast. You’ll see the bar down below and a slider will indicate how far you’ve charged it. This one is barely into Empowered Fire Breath I:

With Press and Tap, you click it once to start breathing in, and click it again when you want to release the breath.

Pure Opinion: Personally, I found Press and Tap less prone to user error and easier to use in an actual combat situation, particularly if you want to move while casting.

When you are charging your spell, you will see lines on the ground that show you where the cone will cast. You have time during charge-up to reposition the cone by pivoting to the left or right.

It is possible for the inhale to be interrupted and to lose your cast time. While you can change the cone direction by moving to the left or right, moving forward or backward during the inhale will stop the cast.

Background

Every dracthyr is an expert soldier. Whatever weyrn they serve, they use their talents to defend dragonkind in obedience to the Earth-Warder. Yet even among such illustrious ranks, there are a select few who transcend the skills of their kin. Who are able to master the specialties of all weyrns and shift between roles at will. These are the evokers. The best of the best, finest of the finest.

These elite forces possess the rare potential to focus their essences into an instrument of preservation or a weapon of devastation. The journey to such mastery is long, and few dracthyr can see this path through. But those who learn to harness their full potential shall be honored with the title of evoker.

Development

The evokers were created as an alternative to the pre-existing classes. Upon the creation of the dracthyr, developers felt as if the original classes did not encompass the idea of the dracthyr that they wanted; and so, to create a work around this issue, a unique class was made to represent the wonders of the dragonflights.

Notes and trivia

  • As they are a race/class combo, they have combat racials that are exclusive with the class: [Wing Buffet] (a cone knock back) and [Tail Swipe] (an AoE knock up).
  • Evokers will likely earn talent points from questing in their starting zone in a manner similar to the Demon Hunter/Death Knight starting experiences.
  • Evokers’ abilities are visually designed to showcase that they can use the magic of all five dragonflights. For example, [Pyre] is a red dragonflight-based spell that begins as a swirl of magic with the different flights’ colors, then turns red as it flies through the air. The developers call this a “prismatic effect.”
