The Undercity is the capital city of the Forsaken undead of the Horde. It is located in Tirisfal Glades, at the northern edge of the Eastern Kingdoms. Far beneath the ruined capital city of Lordaeron, the royal crypts have been turned into a bastion of evil and undeath. Originally intended by Prince Arthas to be the Scourge's seat of power, the budding "Undercity" was abandoned when Arthas was recalled to aid the Lich King in distant Northrend. In Arthas's absence, the Dark Lady, Sylvanas Windrunner, led the rebel Forsaken to the Undercity, and claimed it for her own. Since taking up residence, the Forsaken have worked to complete the Undercity's construction by dredging the twisted maze of catacombs, tombs, and dungeons that Arthas began.
Areas of Interest:
Ruins of Lordaeron: Outdoor area, memorial to King Terenas made by members of the Forsaken, Orb of Translocution porting Horde to Silvermoon. Elevators transport players to the main lower level.
The War Quarter: Northwest quadrant. Priest, warrior, hunter, blacksmithing, mining trainers.
The Magic Quarter: Northeast quadrant. Mage, warlock, tailoring, portal trainers.
The Trade Quarter: City center, bank, flight paths, cooking trainer, guildmaster, staircases to other levels. Auctioneers are on outside ring of the quarter.
The Rogue's Quarter: Southeast quadrant. features Rogue, Leatherworking, Skinning, Engineering, First Aid trainers, poison vendors.
The Royal Quarter: Southwest quadrant. Throne room for Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, Battlemasters.
The Sewers: Alternate entrance to the Undercity, by the Scarlet Watchtower. Popular entry point for Alliance.
The Apothecarium: Southwest quadrant. Home of the Royal Apothecary Society, seeking to create deadly plagues and experiments. Alchemy, Herbalism, Enchanting trainers.
History:
The Undercity was originally simply a system of sewers, crypts, and catacombs beneath the Capital City of Lordaeron. After the city was destroyed by the Scourge, Arthas had the underground warren expanded and rebuilt. He originally intended for the Undercity to be his seat of power, from which he would rule the Plaguelands. However, shortly after the Third War ended, Arthas was forced to return to Northrend and save the Lich King. In his absence, Sylvanas Windrunner and her rebel Undead captured the ruins of the city. Soon after, she discovered the massive underground fortress, and decided to establish it as the main base of operations for the Undead Forsaken.
After the Forsaken were betrayed by Grand Apothecary Putress at Wrathgate, who split off from the Horde to launch a lethal chemical assault, the Forsaken were nevertheless mistrusted by the rest of the Horde. They have tried to demonstrate their loyalty in various ways, such as attacking the kingdom of Gilneas.
In addition, with the death of the Lich King, Sylvanas has accepted members of the Scourge into the Forsaken. Some speculate that she has used the Lich King's methods for her own needs, using the Val'kyr to resurrect bodies, reprogramming them as mindless servants to further the Forsaken's agenda.
