Death Runes are extremely useful. Let me give you an example of how I use them as Frost. You take Blood of the North to generate Frost Runes and alternate between an A cycle and a B cycle.

Cycle A: Plague > Icy > Blood > Blood > Obliterate
Cycle B: Plague > Icy > Obliterate > Obliterate


Add to that Epidemic which makes your diseases last for two cycles, and you get:

Cycle A: Plague > Icy > Blood > Blood > Obliterate
Cycle B1: Obliterate > Obliterate > Obliterate



As Blood, Death Rune Mastery is a little harder to make use of, this really seems to be the only way and it requires Epidemic as well.

Cycle A: Icy > Plague > Heart > Heart > Death
Cycle B: Heart > Heart > Heart > Heart > Oblit


But instead of that, you can skip Death Rune Mastery and get Annihilation with Epidemic and do this:

Cycle A: Icy > Plague > Heart > Heart > Oblit
Cycle B: Heart > Heart > Oblit > Oblit
