Dire Maul West

Introduction

The western wing of Dire Maul is rather short but is packed full of enemies and very hard bosses. Groups entering this side will generally want a Warlock and a Priest as there are plenty of undead and elemental enemies to deal with.

Dire Maul¡¯s gimmick is that there are five pylons that need to be disabled to unlock the prison which contains Immol¡¯thar. Once the prison is open, Prince Tortheldrin will get extremely angry and become hostile, meaning that he¡¯s the final boss of the western wing of Dire Maul.

It¡¯s no joke that this side of Dire Maul is hard and very straightforward. Warlocks are heavily desired as they can banish the elementals guarding the pylons, which makes the western wing extremely easy. There are four major bosses and two optional bosses.

One thing to note about this instance is that a lot of the enemies can be skipped by simply avoiding them using various tactics. Most of these tactics are obvious, for instance the really annoying trees at the entrance can be avoided by waiting for the patrol to walk by. A large group of highborn spirits in the second section can be avoided by jumping up on the railing and walking around. Lots of these tricks can help speed up the run!

Overall, Dire Maul West will take roughly an hour and a half to complete. It may take longer depending on your luck with slaying the last boss, the Prince. The Prince is a very difficult encounter which may prove a tad difficult.

Dire Maul West Walkthrough

When you first enter the dungeon you¡¯ll be close to the courtyard (apparently each wing has its own courtyard!) where there are patrols of giant trees running around in a circle with trees hanging around the side walls and a pylon directly west (infront) of you. The easiest way to handle this first pylon is to sneak around the wall (avoiding the tree patrols) and pulling the elementals to a safe spot.

How exactly do you deal with elementals Well, the best way is to have a Warlock simply banish one while you kill the other (they almost always come in pairs). If you don¡¯t have a Warlock then you¡¯ll need to find someway to keep them away from the casters. They like mana a lot and so do your casters, so it¡¯s best to keep the two separate.

After the pylon is dealt with you should continue heading north. You can avoid a lot of the patrolling trees by running between their patrols. Your next destination is a large field containing a giant tree known as Tendris Warpwood. This boss is extremely easy and should be no problem at all. It teleports and roots people but that isn¡¯t really a problem. It doesn¡¯t drop very good loot though. With Tendris defeated head up the ramp and follow the railing south then west.

When you continue westward you¡¯ll find a door leading south that contains some spectral highborn. If anyone in your group needs an FR necklace or a Mindtap Talisman then clear a path to Magistar Kalendris. The ghosts are really difficult (they use various spells like Frost Bolt) and there are even invisible ghosts in this area! This is where a Priest can come in real handy with the ability to shackle the various ghosts. After you have cleared to Magistar Kalendris (the western corner) you can safely engage as long as no ghosts are around. He¡¯s real easy, just fight him like a normal boss. If he mind controls someone then just crowd control (polymorph for instance) them. If you want, after defeating Magistar Kalendris you can check northward for Tsu¡¯zee who is a rare boss spawn. Many players don¡¯t find it worthwhile to go after him though (he¡¯s a simple melee boss).

Head back out of this area and continue northward until you hit a ram going upward. If you didn¡¯t go after Magistar Kalendris then just ignore the entrance and continue around until you come to a ramp. This area has several floors with two pylons at the top and Illyanna Ravenoak in the southwest corner. You basically need to clear to the top floor and take out the pylon (one of the north and south sides) then go on the opposite side and take the other one out. While in the south corner you can pull and fight the hunter boss, Illyana Ravenoak. She has a bear with her that will charge various people which means that someone should tank the bear and focus fire all the rest of the DPS on Illyana.

A small message about avoiding enemies inside of the western wing of Dire Maul. There are a lot of enemies in this part which can really slow your adventure down. The path that you take and how you avoid the enemies is up to your party since skipping enemies is something everyone has to do. There are various tricks to use, for instance you can use various pottery to get up on top of the railing and follow the railing around to avoid the boss.

As another note, those of you doing Dire Maul west for the first time should take note of a bridge with a group of spirits on it. There is a quest here to deactivate the pylons, take out the beast, and kill the prince. It¡¯s good coin and provides a nice Superior quality item!

Once the two pylons in this area have been taken out you can open the door (leading into a tunnel) and head deeper inside (westward). The door is on the bottom floor part of this area. When you arrive at the end of the tunnel you will see a spectacular lightshow. There are a ton of elementals (one large elemental and group of smaller ones following the larger ones) patrolling around in a circle. You have two options, banish the big guy then kill the minions and then work on the big guy or try to avoid their patrols and get to the pylons (which are north and south of the tunnels exit). Either way, your goal now is to get to and deactivate the last two pylons. When that¡¯s done the force field containing the beast will fall and you will see a neat little encounter where it wipes out the group guarding him.

Don¡¯t rush towards Immol¡¯thar because there are Mana Bursts circling around. You have to find a gap in their patrol and sneak through. If you aggro them then your party will have to not only deal them but also take the risk of loosing a party member when it explodes on death!

Once you arrive at Immol¡¯thar you will need to be ready for a somewhat difficult fight (very similar to King Gordok). Immol¡¯thar will be a standard melee boss but he¡¯ll summon something that looks like an Eye of Kilrogg. This needs to be dealt with or else it¡¯ll debuff everyone. It can be banished so this is where a Warlock can once again really help!

You aren¡¯t done after taking down the beast, oh no. See Immol¡¯thar kind of took out some buddies of his when you opened the force field (not that they weren¡¯t going to have their magical power absorbed by the prince) of Prince Tortheldrin. He¡¯s located in the library (a door, conveniently enough is located next to the northern pylon) and is ready for battle.

He¡¯s kind of a very difficult battle since he has very sketchy aggro and the ability to teleport around. You¡¯ll need to have a tank keep his back to the wall most of the fight so that the tank can quickly regain aggro when knocked back. He does a lot of melee damage and can quickly take out even those in plate. So you¡¯ll need to be on your guard for him. Once he is slain you can head back to the ghost on the bridge to turn in your quest (which leads you back to the library for your reward) and you can also finish the Elven Legends quest by checking out a skeleton on the floor in the library.

That¡¯s it for Dire Maul West!
