Disenchant - "Extracts the magical elementals from good quality (Green) or better weapons or armor. Destroys the weapon or armor in the process." After you disenchant an item, you'll receive a loot box and you can pick up the items you have created by disenchanting. You receive the Disenchant ability when you acquire enchanting. The reagent you get from disenchanting an item depends on the item type and level.

Armor - Usually dust (Sometimes essence and if you are very lucky, a shard)
Weapons - Usually essence (Sometimes dust and if you are very lucky, a shard)
Blue Items - A shard
Purple Items - Nexus Crystal, Void Crystal

Epic items that are level 51-60 and above will disenchant into a Nexus Crystal. Also items that normally disenchant into Large Brilliant Shards have a very small chance of disenchanting into a Nexus Crystal. Powerful enchanting recipes that require these Crystals can be found in the Ahn'Qiraj content. This recipe to transform a Nexus Crystal into a Small Prismatic Shard is available on some Enchanting trainers.

Epic (Purple) level 61-70 items will disenchant into Void Crystals. Rare (Blue) items that are level 61-70 also have a small chance of disenchanting into a Void Crystal.

There is a recipe at a Sunwell Daily faction vendor to shatter a Void Crystal into two Large Prismatic Shards.

Skill Level Limits on Disenchanting

Essences
Essences are usually found from disenchanting uncommon quality weapons but can also be produced from uncommon quality armor. For all types of essences, you can convert three minor essences into a major essence of the same type by right clicking on the essences you wish to convert. Likewise, right-clicking on a major essence will turn it into three minor essences.

1 - 3 Small Prismatic Shards can be converted into 1 Large Prismatic Shard.
2 - 1 Large Prismatic Shard can be converted into 3 Small Prismatic Shards.

Your enchanting recipes then require various ingredients, with the really powerful ones requiring a shard as one of the reagents.

Make sure you don't disenchant an item you wish to keep.

Finding items to Disenchant

  • Ask your friends or guildmates to send you old items they don't want so that you can disenchant them.
  • Buy disenchantable items from other players. Some players try to sell them for this purpose.
  • Disenchant soulbound quest items rather than selling them.
